Is your erection not hard enough or not lasting long enough?

Many men experience this: an erection occurs but falls too soon, or it isn’t full enough for intercourse. A prescription is not always necessary – a simple silicone constriction ring can help keep blood in the penis longer, making the erection feel fuller and more durable.

Why choose the Backup Ring constriction ring?

Fuller, firmer erection

The ring slightly narrows venous outflow at the base of the penis, allowing blood to remain longer in the corpora cavernosa. The erection can feel fuller and more stable.

Longer-lasting intercourse

By supporting venous closure, the duration of the erection may increase – enabling a calmer, less rushed experience.

More intense sensation for both partners

The upper part of the ring may contact the partner’s sensitive area around the pubic bone, providing extra stimulation during intercourse.

No prescription, use at home

No prescription, side-effect lists, or medical procedures are required. A discreet, easy-to-use aid.

Universal size

Made from flexible, medical-grade silicone – one size fits the vast majority of adult men.

CE medical device

The Backup Ring complies with European medical device standards. CE (EU MDR) conformity. Manufacturer: KESSEL medintim GmbH, Germany.

Mild erectile weakness is often not a serious disease but a simple physiological change – frequently related to aging, fatigue, or stress. Before turning to prescription medications, it can be worthwhile to try a mechanical aid. The Backup Ring is such a simple, non-prescription option: it supports keeping blood in place by applying gentle pressure at the base of the penis. For persistent or severe complaints I recommend a thorough urological evaluation.

When is it recommended?

After age 50 it is common for erections to be less firm and less durable than before. Mild venous leakage may be the underlying cause – in such cases a silicone constriction ring can mechanically help make the erection more stable and longer-lasting.

If an erection occurs but is not firm enough or subsides quickly, the constriction ring can help retain blood locally. For more severe or persistent erectile dysfunction it may not be sufficient alone – in such cases it can be used in combination with a vacuum erection device.

For users of vacuum devices (Active 3, Manual Erection System) the constriction ring is a classic accessory. The pump creates the erection, and the ring can help maintain it – together they form an effective mechanical solution without a prescription.

Many causes of erectile dysfunction are cardiovascular, hormonal, or neurological. The Backup Ring does not replace these treatments – but alongside prescribed urological therapy it may help make erections more stable. Consult your physician or urologist before use.

How does the constriction ring work?

An erection develops when arterial blood fills the corpora cavernosa of the penis while venous outflow slows, keeping blood in place. If this venous closure is insufficient – for example due to mild venous leakage – the erection can subside quickly.

The Backup Ring offers a simple mechanical solution: by applying gentle circumferential pressure at the base of the penis it reduces venous outflow while arterial blood flow remains unobstructed. This allows blood to stay longer in the penis, supporting erection fullness and duration. This method has been used in urological practice for decades – both as a standalone aid and as an accessory to vacuum erection devices.

Important: Do not use the constriction ring for more than 30 minutes continuously. If you notice numbness, pain or skin discoloration, remove it immediately. Prolonged blood pooling can cause tissue damage.

User instructions – short

1

Preparation

Take the ring in your hand and check that it is undamaged and clean. If needed, apply a drop of water-based lubricant for easier placement.

2

Placement

Gently stretch the flexible silicone ring with both hands. Slide it over the penis and testicles, then position it at the base of the penis – behind the testicles, close to the body. The ring can be placed when the penis is flaccid or erect.

3

Check

The ring should be snug but not painfully tight. If you notice numbness, pain or skin discoloration, remove it immediately.

4

Removal

Wear it for a maximum of 30 minutes. After intercourse, remove it – simply stretch it and slide it off.

When NOT to use the constriction ring?

Do NOT use the constriction ring if:

  • You are on anticoagulant therapy (Warfarin, direct oral anticoagulants) or have a known bleeding disorder (e.g. hemophilia)
  • You have sickle cell anemia, leukemia, or multiple myeloma
  • You have a history of priapism (prolonged, painful erection)
  • You have severe Peyronie’s disease (significant penile curvature)
  • You have a penile implant
  • Active genital dermatitis, eczema, or an open wound on the penis/scrotum
  • Reduced or absent sensation in the penis (e.g. diabetic or other neuropathy)
  • Known hypersensitivity to silicone

If in doubt, consult your treating physician or urologist!

Possible side effects

During use you may experience:

  • Mild squeezing sensation (a normal sign of function)
  • Temporary redness of the skin under the ring
  • Rarely: numbness, pain (with prolonged use)
  • Color change due to blood pooling – remove immediately in this case

Discontinue use and consult your physician if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Frequently asked questions

Maximum 30 minutes. Prolonged blood pooling beyond this time can cause pain, numbness, and in some cases tissue damage. If you notice numbness, pain, or skin discoloration, remove it immediately.

If you are on anticoagulant therapy (Warfarin, Sintrom, direct oral anticoagulants – e.g. apixaban, rivaroxaban), have a bleeding disorder (hemophilia), sickle cell disease, or other hematologic condition, consult your treating physician before using a constriction ring.

The Backup Ring is made of flexible silicone and is designed to fit the vast majority of adult men. If the ring feels too tight or too loose, consider choosing another type of constriction ring – for example the Helpi Ring or sizes available in vacuum device accessory ranges.

Yes. First put the condom on the penis, then slide the Backup Ring into place. The silicone constriction ring does not compromise the protective effect of the condom.

Yes, this is one of the most common uses. The vacuum device (e.g. Active 3, Manual Erection System) creates the erection, and the constriction ring can help maintain it. It can be used alongside prescription treatments as well, but always consult your treating physician first.

Yes. The Backup Ring is made of medical-grade, latex-free silicone, so it is suitable for those with latex allergy.

Scientific background and sources

The use of penile constriction rings and vacuum erection devices (VED / VCD) is recognized by the European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines in the treatment of erectile dysfunction – both as standalone therapy and as an accessory to vacuum devices. The mechanism of the constriction ring is reduction of venous outflow, which supports the maintenance of an erection.
