Veterinary Ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound is the basic method of modern veterinary rehabilitation and physiotherapy: high-frequency sound waves support the regeneration of soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, joint capsule) through thermal and non-thermal biological effects, reduce pain, and can help restore range of motion. The technology is effective both for small animals and horses, with targeted programs and species-specific protocols available.

What is it recommended for?

  • Muscle contractures, muscle strains, muscle pain
  • Tendinitis, bursitis, joint wear (osteoarthritis/osteoarthrosis)
  • Adhered scar tissue mobilization
  • Increasing joint range of motion during rehabilitation (both for small animals and horses)

How does it work?

The ultrasound head's crystal vibrates under electrical stimulation, emitting continuous or pulsed waves. The head is placed directly on the skin with gel to efficiently transmit energy to the tissues. Continuous mode primarily provides deep heating, enhancing circulation and metabolism; pulsed mode mainly targets non-thermal, healing-promoting micromechanical effects.

Advantages summarized

  • Enhanced metabolism and circulation, more elastic connective tissue
  • Faster regeneration, reduced pain sensation
  • Targeted energy delivery: superficial and deeper structures can be separately treated (1 and 3 MHz frequencies)
  • Species-specific protocols: devices available with separate small animal and horse programs

For small animals (dogs, cats, small mammals)

Targeted ultrasound therapy fits well into post-surgical rehabilitation, as complementary therapy for tendon and joint problems, and for mobilizing adhered scar tissue. Common goals include pain relief, swelling reduction, improving tissue elasticity, and increasing range of motion.

For horses

Sport horses often suffer from tendon and ligament overload and periarticular soft tissue complaints. Ultrasound can be specifically applied to support healing and remodeling phases, organize scar tissue, and improve limb flexibility.

How to choose a device?

  • Frequency (1–3 MHz): 3 MHz is generally used for more superficial tissues, 1 MHz for deeper structures.
  • Operating mode: both continuous and pulsed modes should be available to treat both acute and chronic conditions.
  • Power: a maximum output of 3 W/cm² is standard in veterinary applications, with adjustable dosage settings.
  • Protocols: preset programs for small animals and horses facilitate everyday use.

Example: the Globus Ultrasoundvet 4000 operates at 1 and 3 MHz with continuous and pulsed modes, has a maximum power of 3 W/cm², and offers programs designed for dogs, cats, and horses.

Safety and contraindications

General contraindications include tumor regions, active infections, coagulation disorders, fresh bleeding, acute thrombosis, open growth plates (in young animals’ long bones), treatment over the abdomen/bags during pregnancy, and the immediate area around pacemakers or electronic implants. Always seek advice from a veterinarian or veterinary physiotherapist and follow the manufacturer's protocols. (Operating principle and treatment modes:)

How does it fit with other subcategories?

  • Veterinary electrotherapy – pain relief and muscle stimulation: can be combined with ultrasound in comprehensive rehab programs.
  • Veterinary magnet therapy – supports bone and soft tissue regeneration and chronic pain management.
  • Veterinary laser therapy – reduces inflammation, promotes wound healing and pain relief: often preferred in acute phases, followed by ultrasound for deeper tissue treatment.

These methods complement each other, and all are available in the MediMarket selection for both small animal and horse-specific use.
