Hay fever – prevent it with salt therapy!

From spring to autumn, millions of weeds bloom along ditches, agricultural fields and neglected gardens and begin releasing their pollen. Many people react sensitively when they come into contact with these. This is hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis. Many different pollens can trigger it, such as hazel, poplar, ragweed or wild hemp. Its symptoms include nasal congestion, itchy eyes and endless sneezing.

The human body has protections against pathogens and external agents called the immune system. Its task is to neutralize harmful substances that enter the body. As soon as it detects a “hostile” substance, the defense system sounds the alarm and begins to destroy or at least inactivate the intruder. If this defense system malfunctions and the body responds to an allergen with a stronger defense than necessary, the person is "allergic." They may experience an unpleasant range of symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, runny nose, itchy throat and tearing. The mucous membrane appears pale and swollen. In more severe cases, insomnia may occur because sneezing, coughing and itching make night rest impossible.

Hay fever is therefore an overreaction of the body's defense system triggered by contact with certain substances. The tendency to develop hay fever is hereditary. Depending on genetic makeup, different allergens may trigger hay fever. These can be plant pollen, animal hair, mites, mold and fungal spores, or even house dust.

The diagnosis of hay fever is made based on skin testing (prick test) and an ear-nose-throat examination.

Types of hay fever:

  • seasonal (symptoms last less than one month)
  • persistent (symptoms last longer than one month)

Treatment of hay fever

Fortunately, there are specific medications available in tablet or spray form for treating hay fever, the so-called antihistamines. Instead of helping the body remove allergens, they regulate the immune system's response to attack. Unfortunately, they are not intended to teach the body how to handle allergens correctly. So as soon as the patient stops taking antihistamines, the hay fever flares up again. The only way to eliminate hay fever is to restore the body's ability to defend itself against allergens.

One such treatment is salt therapy. It both reduces the severity of symptoms and increases the body's resistance to allergens.

Salt therapy

I made a film about the application of salt therapy. Press the play button and watch it now!

Salt therapy is a treatment method that uses salt particles as the active material. The goal of the treatment is for you to inhale microscopic salt particles.

These salt crystals adhere to the surface of the mucous membrane lining the airways. They help cleanse the airways, neutralize allergens and destroy pathogens. Symptoms decrease. Start the treatment even during symptom-free periods to prevent complaints from developing, and in any case symptoms will be milder than usual. With preventive salt therapy, allergic attacks decrease or may not occur at all.

Salt therapy provides protection against allergens. The longer you stay in salt-rich air, the stronger the effect. If you have been to the seaside, you may have noticed that your symptoms, which were still "raging" at home, calmed down or disappeared in a short time. This is the beneficial effect of salt air.

At home you usually stay in one place most at night, so it is worth operating the device next to your bed while you sleep — this gives you continuous treatment. For this I recommend the SaltDome salt therapy device, because it is very simple to use and provides air with an even salt content. It uses ultrasond nebulization to create microscopic salt particles and emits them at a uniform concentration, producing constant salt air. One fill lasts 5–7 days.

It is most effective if you keep it on your bedside table and run it while you sleep. That way you can treat your hay fever symptoms during sleep or prevent them from developing.
