What is the airway cleaning (OPEP) device, and who is it for?
The airway cleaning device operates on the principle of OPEP (oscillating positive expiratory pressure). During treatment you breathe in and out through the device: on exhalation a slight positive pressure and a simultaneous vibration (oscillation) occur in the airways. This vibration can help break up the sticky mucus lining the airways, making it easier to cough up and remove.
A drug-free device designed for home use, which can assist as an adjunct method in clearing airway secretions in conditions where thick mucus accumulates – for example COPD, cystic fibrosis, or pneumonia. Oscillation has been used for decades in airway physiotherapy; its clinical effect has long been known.
