WHAT IS THE AEROBIKA OPEP DEVICE?

The device generates oscillating (vibrating) positive expiratory pressure (OPEP) inside the airways. When you exhale with slight force through the device, a valve inside activates, creating vibrations in the airways. This resistance opens the airways, and the vibration breaks up the thick mucus layer that is hard to cough up.

Performing this breathing 2-3 times daily helps loosen and expel obstructive mucus.

WHAT CAUSES MUCOUS BUILUP IN THE LUNGS?

Several factors synergistically increase mucus production and hinder its clearance. Repeated lung infections (e.g., pneumonia or bronchitis) reduce lung elasticity, causing airways to collapse at the end of exhalation and not reopen during inhalation. Mucus accumulates behind blocked airways, trapping inhaled air. WHY CAN'T THE LUNGS CLEAR THE EXCESS MUCOUS?

The cilia in the lung mucosa transport mucus to the larger airways for coughing out. In bronchitis, mucus production is so intense the lungs cannot keep up, leading to accumulation and thickening of mucus. This forms a thick, sticky layer that cilia cannot remove, requiring assistance. HOW TO USE THE AEROBIKA OPEP DEVICE

• If COPD symptoms worsen, use the device 2-3 times a day for 10 minutes each session.
• When COPD symptoms are stable, use once daily as prevention.
• It is also recommended for residual symptoms like cough and mucus after COVID pneumonia, based on latest data.

DEVICE USE IS SIMPLE

• Set the resistance control to the lowest setting (minus sign)
• Sit down, place the device's mouthpiece in your mouth
• Inhale normally through the device
• Exhale more forcefully through the device (like inflating a balloon)
• Exhalation should be slow and steady, longer than inhalation
• Repeat breathing through the device for 10 minutes, coughing as needed to clear airways
• You will feel vibrations in your chest during exhale – this is the effect
• Stronger vibration means more effective airway clearance
• Do not start with the highest resistance! Exhaling through the device at high resistance can cause fatigue and worsen breathlessness after a few minutes
• Start at the lowest resistance and if you can complete 10 minutes without increased breathlessness, try a higher setting next time
• Find the resistance at which you clearly feel vibrations in your chest but do not get more breathless over 10 minutes
• This is the most effective treatment!

USEFUL TIPS FOR USING THE AEROBIKA OPEP

• Perform active exhalation
• Active exhalation means blowing as if you were blowing out a candle or inflating a balloon
• Stronger exhalation creates stronger vibrations, more effectively clearing airways - but be cautious as very ill patients may fatigue from forced breathing
• Keep your cheeks flat and do not puff them out while exhaling

CLEANING THE AEROBIKA DEVICE

• The device manual provides detailed cleaning instructions
• Since mucus contains pathogens, the device can get contaminated during exhalation
• Clean the device after every use
• The manufacturer recommends replacing the Aerobika device every 12 months
