The Kotz-type stimulation (also known as Russian stimulation) is a specialized electrical muscle stimulation technique originally developed by the Soviet scientist Ja. M. Kotz. The method is used in sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Its primary goal is to develop and strengthen muscles and facilitate regeneration. Electrical impulses artificially induce muscle contractions, which help increase muscle strength and accelerate muscle recovery.

How does Kotz treatment work?

  • During Kotz treatment, a special medium-frequency electrical current is applied, which penetrates deeply into the muscles. This electrical stimulation targets the muscle fibers, stimulating contractions similar to natural muscle activity.
  • The main effect of the treatment is to increase muscle strength. It also improves muscle endurance and accelerates post-injury regeneration.
  • It improves communication between the muscle and the nervous system, thus helping to enhance motor control, especially in post-injury rehabilitation.

What is it used for?

Kotz treatment is used in a variety of areas:

  • Muscle strengthening: An effective method for increasing muscle strength and endurance, especially for athletes and those engaged in physically demanding work.
  • Rehabilitation: Helps regenerate injured or weakened muscles, for example after surgeries or accidents.
  • Pain relief: Although the primary goal is muscle development, it is also used for pain relief, since electrical impulses stimulate nerve endings.
  • Prevention of muscle atrophy: For those who are immobile or have limited mobility, Kotz treatment can help prevent muscle atrophy.

Contraindications

As with any medical or physiotherapeutic procedure, Kotz treatment also has contraindications. These may include:

  • Use of a pacemaker: Electrical stimulation can interfere with the function of older pacemakers, so application near a pacemaker is not recommended, although it may be used at a distance under professional supervision.
  • Acute inflammatory conditions: Not recommended in inflamed areas.
  • Epilepsy: Electrical impulses may trigger seizures in patients with epilepsy.
  • Pregnancy: Particularly not recommended on the abdomen and back during pregnancy.
  • Oncological diseases: Not recommended for patients with active tumors, although it may be applied to distant areas.
  • Recent fractures or severe injuries: Immediate electrical stimulation is not recommended until the injury has properly healed.
