Guide What is Kotz (Russian) stimulation?

The Kotz stimulation (also known as Russian stimulation) is a specialized electrical muscle stimulation technique originally developed by the Soviet researcher Ja. M. Kotz. It is used in sports medicine and rehabilitation, primarily to increase muscle strength and endurance and to support recovery.

The method uses a medium-frequency current that penetrates deeper into the muscles and elicits strong yet relatively well-tolerated muscle contractions. This is an advanced feature available on higher-end, versatile electrotherapy devices.

Key idea Who is it for?

Kotz is mainly of interest to those seeking serious muscle strengthening and sports rehabilitation and looking for a versatile, professional device. As a feature of top-tier devices, Kotz typically comes alongside the full electrotherapy toolset (TENS, EMS, microcurrent, etc.). In the detailed selection guide below the products we help you choose the right device.

Function How does it work?

Kotz treatment works with a medium-frequency electrical current that penetrates deeper into muscle fibers and produces strong muscle contractions—similar to the muscle working naturally. The method is primarily used for the following:

  • Muscle strengthening: supporting increases in muscle strength and endurance, typically for athletes and physically active users
  • Rehabilitation: supporting recovery of weakened muscles after surgery or injury
  • Motor control: supporting coordination between muscles and the nervous system, especially during post-injury rehabilitation
  • Prevention of muscle atrophy: helping maintain muscle mass when mobility is limited

Which device should you choose?

The Kotz function is available in two top-tier, 4-channel devices in our range. Both offer many other treatment modes — let the available programs and your intended use guide your choice.

Device Recommended for
Genesy 1500 Versatile, top-tier home device for muscle strengthening, rehabilitation and pain management
Genesy 3000 The model with the widest program selection, suitable for both home and clinic use

If your goal is conventional muscle strengthening (not necessarily using the Kotz method), also check our muscle stimulator devices. You can read about other advanced methods on the interference treatment page, and for a complete overview see the electrical treatment main page.

Tip Dr. Zátrok's advice

Kotz provides stronger muscle stimulation than simple EMS — therefore it is suited for advanced users, those experienced in sports rehabilitation, or professionals. If you are just starting out, you do not necessarily need the most expensive device just for this feature.

Muscle gains do not result from a single treatment: Kotz will be effective when used regularly and progressively, ideally as part of a proper training or rehabilitation plan.

Contraindication When NOT to use it?

Kotz treatment is generally well tolerated, but in the following cases seek medical advice before purchase and use:

  • Pacemaker or other implanted electronic device
  • Severe cardiac arrhythmia
  • Pregnancy (especially on the abdomen and back)
  • Epilepsy
  • Cancer in the treatment area
  • Acute inflammatory condition in the treatment area
  • Recent fracture or severe, not-yet-healed injury

Information Advanced method – start prepared

Kotz is a stronger stimulation, so correct intensity and program settings are important. For rehabilitation purposes, start the treatment preferably under the guidance of a professional (physiotherapist, sports physician).

The information in this description is for informational purposes only. Home therapy devices are intended to complement medical treatment and do not replace it. Consult your treating physician if you have complaints. The devices have CE medical device certification.
