Kinesiology tape – colorful "sticky strips" for musculoskeletal problems
Kinesiology tape (kinesio tape) is a special, highly elastic adhesive tape developed for the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal complaints and pain. It gained popularity among athletes — today we can see competitors wearing the distinctive colorful strips at almost every sports broadcast — but the method goes far beyond sports medicine.
The kinesio taping method was developed in the 1970s by Japanese chiropractor Dr. Kenzo Kase. He recognized that joint problems are often caused by imbalances in the muscles surrounding the affected area, and that traditional rigid supports do not provide an optimal solution. In contrast, kinesiology tape allows movement while supporting the body's self-healing processes. The method became globally known at the 2008 Beijing and the 2012 London Olympics, when many athletes wore the colorful strips.
How does kinesiology tape work?
Kinesiology tape is made of cotton, is breathable, water-resistant, and its elasticity is similar to human skin. The strip can be stretched longitudinally to about 130–140%, while it is rigid across the width — this provides its special mechanism of action.
When the tape is applied to the skin, it slightly lifts the skin surface. This microscopic "lifting effect" initiates several beneficial processes:
- Improved blood and lymphatic circulation – tissue oxygen and nutrient supply increases
- Reduced pressure – the compression between muscles, connective tissues and nerves is eased
- Pain relief – it reduces the body's pain perception via receptors
- Supports joints – provides stability without restricting movement
- Stimulates self-healing – the continuous, gentle stimulation activates the body's regenerative capacity
After application, the tape exerts its effect continuously for 3–5 days and can remain on the skin during showering or swimming.
When can it be used?
Kinesiology tape is a useful complementary treatment for many musculoskeletal problems:
- Muscle issues: strains, overuse, delayed onset muscle soreness, cramps, rehabilitation of partial muscle tears
- Joint complaints: pain, inflammation, swelling, instability, cartilage wear
- Tendon problems: tenosynovitis, tendinitis, rehabilitation of partial ligament tears
- Other applications: speeding up the absorption of bruises, treating edema, postoperative rehabilitation, improving lymphatic circulation, treating scars
- The tape is also suitable for prevention: applied before sports it can reduce the risk of overload and injury.
The significance of colors
Kinesiology tapes are available in many colors. It is important to know that the tape's material composition and elasticity are the same regardless of color — color choice is more a matter of personal preference.
According to proponents of color therapy, different colors may have different effects:
- Blue – cooling, pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory
- Red – warming, vasodilating, increases circulation
- Pink – calming, muscle-relaxing
- Orange – stimulates self-healing processes
- Green – relaxing, recommended for joint inflammation
- Beige/skin tone – neutral, discreet, less conspicuous
- Black – conveys strength, popular among athletes
What you should know about use
The effectiveness of kinesiology tape largely depends on the application technique. Incorrect application can not only be ineffective but may even worsen symptoms — causing swelling or circulation problems.
Before application:
- The skin should be clean, dry and free of oils
- On hairy skin it is advisable to remove the hair
- It is worth learning the correct technique from a professional (physiotherapist, tape therapist)
When not to use:
- On open wounds or unhealed scars
- On skin affected by psoriasis or eczema
- On the abdominal area during the first trimester of pregnancy
- In case of a known allergy to the adhesive
Kinesiology tape does not replace medical treatment, but it can be an excellent complementary therapy alongside other treatments. Its use is drug-free and practically free of side effects — which makes it particularly attractive for those seeking natural solutions for their musculoskeletal complaints.
