What is Nurosym?

Nurosym is a clinically validated and certified, patented medical device designed for neuromodulation.

Nurosym uses the proven tVNS technology to modulate the nervous system and restore the function of neural networks. Targeting the vagus nerve, it sends specially designed signals to the brain to alter physical and mental states and restore health.

This innovative technology offers beneficial effects in atrial fibrillation, stress, and chronic fatigue. Further research is ongoing to evaluate multiple applications of Nurosym.

Nurosym is a clinically validated and certified medical device that can be comfortably used at home. It offers a non-invasive and drug-free alternative to improve patients' quality of life.

How does Nurosym work?

The Nurosym device modulates the autonomic nervous system through the vagus nerve, restoring optimal balance.

The autonomic nervous system is the subconscious part of the peripheral nervous system that regulates the functions of internal organs (such as the heart, lungs, and digestive system), and "orchestrates" interactions between various physiological systems (such as the immune and cardiovascular systems) in response to external and internal stimuli.

The autonomic nervous system consists of two parts: the parasympathetic (rest and digest) and the sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous systems, which exert different and often opposing effects on organ functions (including respiratory rate, pupil dilation, saliva secretion, digestion, peristalsis, and sexual arousal).

Dysfunctions of the autonomic nervous system, or dysautonomia, which cause increased sympathetic activity and suppressed parasympathetic activity, are well recognized and documented in a wide range of chronic physical, psychiatric, and neurological conditions.

By targeting the vagus nerve, Nurosym can stimulate and enhance parasympathetic activity, thereby promoting optimal autonomic nervous system balance and restoring healthy neurophysiological networks.

What is the vagus nerve?

The vagus nerve, also known as the tenth cranial nerve, is an important part of the peripheral nervous system.

It belongs to the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for regulating rest, relaxation, and regeneration. The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the body, extending from the brain to the organs in the abdominal cavity.

The main function of the vagus nerve is to provide communication between the brain and various organs of the body, including the heart, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and internal organs. It plays a crucial role in regulating heart rate, respiration, digestion, and metabolism.

As part of the parasympathetic nervous system, the vagus nerve functions as the counterpart to the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for activating the body and preparing it for physical or emotional stress. The vagus nerve has a calming effect on the body and promotes relaxation, regeneration, and balance in the autonomic nervous system.

Additionally, the vagus nerve plays an important role in regulating the immune system, inflammatory responses, and mood. Stimulating the vagus nerve can achieve therapeutic effects, including reducing inflammation, improving mood, and enhancing overall well-being.

What is tVNS?

Transcutaneous electrical vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is stimulation of the vagus nerve through the skin.

It is done by delivering electrical impulses to the tragus, the front part of the outer ear. This stimulation can modulate vagus nerve function and exert various positive effects on the body, such as regulating heart rate, reducing inflammation, and improving overall health.

What is neuromodulation?

Neuromodulation is a technology that directly affects nerves. It changes—or modulates—nerve activity by delivering electrical impulses or drugs directly to targeted areas.

Neuromodulation devices and therapies can be life-changing. They affect every part of the body and treat nearly every disease or symptom, from headaches to tremors to spinal cord injuries to urinary incontinence. Given this broad therapeutic scope and the ongoing significant advances in biotechnology, neuromodulation is promising as one of the most encouraging methods in the next decade.

Neuromodulation is most commonly associated with chronic pain relief, which is currently the most common indication.

However, neuromodulation has many applications, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson's disease, sacral nerve stimulation for pelvic disorders and incontinence, and spinal cord stimulation for ischemic disorders (angina, peripheral artery disease).

Additionally, neuromodulation devices can trigger responses previously unattainable, such as cochlear implants restoring hearing in deaf patients.

The newest application is vagus stimulation via the tragus (tVNS), which has already demonstrated favorable effects in atrial fibrillation, post-COVID, long COVID, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic fatigue syndromes.

More disorders are being managed increasingly with neuromodulation.

In which conditions is it recommended?

The Nurosym system has been validated in more than 30 published clinical studies, demonstrating its effectiveness across a wide range of diseases.

  • Nurosym has been proven to improve heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of heart rhythm variability. Higher HRV generally correlates with health, fitness, and even healthier stress or emotional baselines, while low HRV is associated with risk factors such as illness, mortality, and stress. Low HRV has been observed in many diseases, including chronic cardiovascular diseases and conditions associated with autonomic nervous system dysfunction.
  • By restoring autonomic tone, Nurosym reduces unhealthy immune response mechanisms through cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP) activation. It stimulates the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which diminishes pro-inflammatory cytokine production and reinitiates healthy nitric oxide production, which in turn improves endothelial function compromised by excessive sympathetic activity.
Placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trials documented decreases in inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), C-reactive protein, and IL-8 interleukin as a result of parasym neuromodulation in patients with elevated baseline levels of these inflammatory cytokines. This is especially beneficial in diseases whose pathophysiological roots lie in systemic inflammation, excessive sympathetic responses, and related pathological immune reactions.

Most common application areas:

  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Long COVID
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

When is the device not recommended?

Nurosym is not recommended in the following cases:

  • Patients with active implanted medical devices, such as pacemakers, hearing implants, or implanted metal or electronic devices.
  • Patients with metal implants in the ear electrode placement area of the left ear. Treatment can be performed on the right ear with an appropriate earphone (on request).
  • Patients with a history of heart disease or atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, including heart failure, known severe coronary artery disease, or recent myocardial infarction (within 5 years).
  • Patients diagnosed with bradycardia (low heart rate) with a pulse rate below 50 beats per minute.
  • Patients who have undergone surgery to cut the cervical vagus nerve (cervical vagotomy).
  • Patients diagnosed with cervical arterial stenosis (carotid atherosclerosis).
  • Patients suffering from pain syndrome without a diagnosed cause.
  • Pediatric patients (under 18 years of age).
  • Pregnant women.

Possible risks of using Nurosym

Nurosym is a low-risk device when used according to the instructions for use.

Side effects are generally rare, mild, and resolve shortly after completing treatment. The most common side effect is skin irritation (tingling/pain/itching) at the electrode placement site, with a low occurrence during long-term use.

No serious side effects have been reported.

Nurosym is designed with special safety features that minimize usage risks. Continuous use at high intensity (beyond the point of comfort or pain) carries the risk of skin ulceration at the stimulation site. Due to Nurosym's safety features and discomfort at excessive intensity, this risk is low.

Rare risks associated with this technology may include dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath, headache, and arrhythmia.

If you experience any side effects during Nurosym use, discontinue treatment. If uncertain, consult your physician or healthcare professional.
