Lower back pain
Lower back pain (or as it is also known, lumbago) is a very common complaint. It is increasingly common among those who do seated or standing work. It can be so severe that it may prevent any movement.
What is lower back pain and what causes it?
In the upright position, our weight presses down on our spine. The greatest load falls on the lumbar-sacral section of the spine. This is why diseases of this section of the spine are the most common.
Nowadays, due to the predominance of sedentary work and the lack of regular exercise, the muscles that support the spine also weaken. Weak muscles do not hold the vertebrae in place, so increasing pressure is placed on the discs that fill the intervertebral space and on the nerves that exit from the spinal cord between the vertebrae. With a sudden movement, the nerve fiber can become “pinched,” causing severe pain in the lower back that prevents any movement – this is the most common cause of lower back pain.
The frequency of occurrence of pain generally increases with age, but even among those in their forties many suffer from the agonizing pain caused by lower back pain.
