Abnormal Sweating

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a harmless yet very unpleasant symptom for those affected. There is a very simple and effective method to treat sweating: tap water iontophoresis. It has been used since the 1940s for hand and foot sweating that does not respond to other treatments. Thanks to modern devices, the treatment can even be effectively and easily performed at home.

Perform the treatments daily. Results can be expected after 10-14 days. Sweating decreases or may even stop entirely; then switch to maintenance treatments (1-2 times per week). Sweating may return after a while, at which point resume daily treatments.

Who is iontophoresis recommended for?

We recommend iontophoresis to those for whom over-the-counter or prescription medications have not helped reduce abnormal sweating and who need a stronger treatment! Tap water iontophoresis improves symptoms in 91% of those suffering from sweating of the palm, sole, and underarm. A major advantage is the complete absence of side effects. The positive effect lasts long-term, especially if you continue with maintenance treatments.

What substance should be used?

Simple tap water is needed for the treatment! Water quality varies by location. If the water is too soft, iontophoresis effects may be diminished because soft water lacks sufficient minerals or electrolytes (tiny electrically charged particles). Use unsoftened water or add a teaspoon of baking soda to the water. Some reports suggest saltwater has a stronger effect. If you are "unsatisfied" with plain tap water, add a little table salt to the water and use that for treatment.

Important information before using iontophoresis

• Only perform iontophoresis treatment if there are no contraindications. These are the same as for other electrotherapy treatments. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and recommendations.
• It is important to know that you might feel a mild tingling sensation during iontophoresis.
• You should also know that the electrical current used in iontophoresis is not strong enough to cause any harm.
• Do not use iontophoresis during pregnancy or if you have a pacemaker, heart disease, or epilepsy. If uncertain, consult your doctor.
• Remove jewelry, rings, and bracelets before treatment.
• If you have cuts or scratches on your skin, apply petroleum jelly before treatment to protect wounds from soaking. Petroleum jelly inhibits iontophoresis, so use only where necessary and sparingly.
• The treatment may cause mild redness on the skin, which fades within minutes. If not, consult your doctor for advice.
• If the treatment excessively dries your skin, use a moisturizing body lotion afterward.

Hand and foot sweating treatment with iontophoresis

• Obtain a large iontophoresis kit, approximately with 5x9cm or larger carbon electrode pads.
• Get two plastic dishes, each sized to fit your hand or foot comfortably.
• Fill each dish with about 1 cm of water. Only immerse your hand or foot halfway in the water!
• Connect the electrode-cable-device as described above.
• Place one sponge electrode in one dish, and the other in the second dish.
• Place both your hands or feet in the respective dishes.
• Start the device. Run the iontophoresis program at 10-15mA current.

Underarm sweating treatment with iontophoresis

• Connect the electrode-cable-device as described above.
• Place one moistened sponge electrode under one armpit, and the other under the other armpit. Keep your arms pressed tightly against your torso until the treatment ends.
• Start the device. Run the iontophoresis program at 10-15mA current.

Regular iontophoresis treatments will very likely help reduce or eliminate the unpleasant sweating.
