PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) guide
PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) guide
A plain, practical guide to home use of pulsed electromagnetic fields. I show what it can be used for, what you can realistically expect from it, and how to choose a device without falling for magnetic miracle stories.
Why I wrote this guide
The term “magnetic therapy” is applied to many different devices, from magnetic bracelets to serious medical devices. They do not mean the same thing and you should not expect the same results from them.
This page deals exclusively with the pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF), which is mainly used as an adjunct in bone healing, musculoskeletal rehabilitation and some chronic complaints.
Advice from Dr. Zsolt Zátrok
PEMF is not a miracle cure, and it does not replace diagnosis, surgery, medication or physiotherapy. In the right indication it can be a valuable part of home rehabilitation.
First, understand what PEMF is
A PEMF device generates a time-varying electromagnetic field using electrical pulses, which can trigger biological responses in the tissues of the treated area.
PEMF ≠ magnetic bracelet
A permanent magnetic bracelet, patch or sheet is not the same as a programmable medical device that creates a pulsed electromagnetic field. Marketing often mixes the two, but professionally they are not the same (nor are their effects).
Bone healing and bone metabolism
Supporting bone regeneration is one of the best-known and most-studied applications of PEMF.
Bone fracture healing and magnetic therapy
The speed of bone healing depends on fracture type, blood supply, age, general health and the stability of fixation.
This article explains when PEMF might be considered as an adjunct treatment and how it can be integrated with conventional care.
Read → Femoral neck fractureFemoral neck fracture and magnetic therapy
In older patients healing after a femoral neck fracture is often slow because bone blood supply is fragile, and osteoporosis commonly coexists.
The article describes the possible role of PEMF after surgical fixation or hip replacement and how it can be combined with rehabilitation.
Read → OsteoporosisOsteoporosis and magnetic therapy
In osteoporosis bone mass and structural strength decline, raising the risk of fractures. Treatment is based on medical therapy, adequate nutrition and weight-bearing exercise.
PEMF does not replace these measures, but it can complement them and may support bone metabolism. The article summarises realistic expectations.
Read → Bone oedemaBone oedema (bone bruise) and home treatment
Bone oedema is not a fracture or a tumour: fluid accumulates inside the bone. It usually doesn’t show on X‑ray and is visible only on MRI, so many people endure months of unexplained pain.
This article explains possible causes, how long resorption may take, and what role PEMF might have in reducing pain and the oedema.
Read →Joint and musculoskeletal problems
Knee pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can be caused by cartilage wear, overload, inflammation, injury or other conditions.
Implants and surgical rehabilitation
For an orthopaedic or dental implant to succeed it is important that it bonds stably with the surrounding bone tissue.
What about BEMER?
BEMER is also a system that uses electromagnetic fields, but it uses its own pulse format, substantially lower magnetic intensity and a different treatment concept.
Which PEMF device should you choose?
The best device is not the one with the longest program list, but the one that fits your condition, the area to be treated and how often you will use it.

When not to start treatment on your own?
In certain conditions using PEMF may require prior medical consultation.

If you have an electronic implant, are pregnant, have active cancer, severe unexplained pain, recent surgery or a rapidly worsening condition, buying a device should not be your first step. First obtain a diagnosis and a treatment plan.
