Vascular and lymphatic diseases affect the circulatory or lymphatic systems and can result in a variety of conditions. They can present diverse symptoms and may cause significant discomfort or even serious health issues. Here are some basic facts about vascular and lymphatic diseases:

Vascular Diseases

  • Varicose Vein Disease: It develops when the walls of the veins weaken or become damaged, causing the veins to enlarge. This leads to venous congestion and results in swelling (also known as edema).
  • Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD): It occurs due to narrowing and blockages in the arteries. It reduces blood flow to the extremities and can cause pain, skin discoloration, sores, or even tissue necrosis.
  • Atherosclerosis: Plaque deposits in the arterial walls can cause the arteries to harden and narrow, which can lead to a range of cardiovascular problems.

Lymphatic System Diseases

  • Lymphedema: Swelling caused by congenital or acquired abnormalities of the lymphatic system. Nowadays, it most commonly develops due to lymphatic damage from accidents, surgery, or radiation therapy.
  • Lymphangitis: A bacterial infection that causes an inflammatory reaction in the lymphatic vessels, leading to swelling, redness, and pain. The most well-known form is erysipelas.

Symptoms

Symptoms can vary and may include swelling, pain, tenderness, skin discoloration, sores, or skin issues (e.g., itching, dryness), as well as numbness or tingling in the affected areas.

Treatment

Treatment of vascular and lymphatic diseases is multimodal: there is no single definitive cure, but a combination of methods can be effective. Lifestyle changes are important, such as healthy eating and especially regular exercise (daily walks, swimming, cycling). Compression therapy (bandaging, compression stockings, manual lymphatic drainage, mechanical lymphatic massage). In severe cases, surgical interventions may be necessary. The selection of methods should be tailored to the specific disease type and severity on an individual basis.

Prevention

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding smoking, regular exercise, proper nutrition, and weight control are important in preventing vascular and lymphatic diseases.
