Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common civilization diseases of our time. Its significance is considerable, since in some developed countries it is already one of the most frequent reasons for taking sick leave. The persistent sensation of back pain and muscle tension hinders daily activities and movement.
What is the most common cause of back pain?
When standing upright, the weight of your body presses down on your spine.
The spinal-supporting muscles – true to their name – hold your spine in place and ensure proper posture.
If you spend the entire day working in a sitting or standing position, and if you have some excess weight, this places extra strain on your spine. If you also neglect regular exercise, the spinal-supporting muscles weaken and can no longer bear the load.
The vertebrae compress against each other and increasing pressure builds on the intervertebral discs. The discs flatten out, and they may even bulge.
If a bulge reaches the nerve roots exiting between the vertebrae, severe pain occurs. In response to the pain, the spinal-supporting muscles reflexively contract even more, which further intensifies the pain.
The three-phase treatment of back pain
Step 1: Pain relief
Pain relief using TENS or MENS (microcurrent) stimulation. Without eliminating the pain first, any treatment, massage, or therapeutic exercise can be very uncomfortable or even worsen the symptoms.
Ultrasound therapy can also be used to enhance the pain-relieving effect. Treating the area around the compressed nerve roots reduces edema and thus the pain.
Step 2: Muscle tension release
Releasing muscle tension in the area of pain. In response to pain, the muscles react with reflex contractions, which can exacerbate the symptoms.
Step 3: Strengthening the spinal-supporting muscles
Once pain and muscle tension have been reduced, you should begin the muscle strengthening necessary for long-term symptom relief. Initially, this can be done via muscle stimulation, gradually transitioning to spine-strengthening physiotherapy or yoga. Without strengthening the muscles that support the spine, symptoms can recur over and over again.
