Abnormal sweating

Excessive perspiration, or hyperhidrosis, is a harmless but very unpleasant symptom for the person concerned. There is a very simple and effective way to treat sweating, tap water iontophoresis. It has been used since the 1940s to treat sweating of the hands and feet, which does not respond to other treatments.

Modern equipment means that the treatment can be done effectively and easily at home.

Treatments are done daily. You can expect results after 10-14 days. If the sweating decreases or even disappears completely, switch to maintenance treatment (1-2 times a week). Sweating will return after a while. Then treat again daily.

Who is iontophoresis recommended for?

Iontophoresis is recommended for those who have not had any relief from sweating with over-the-counter or even prescription products and need a stronger treatment! Tap water iontophoresis results in 91% improvement for people suffering from palm, foot and underarm sweating. A particular advantage is the complete absence of side effects. The beneficial effects are long-lasting, especially if you also carry out maintenance treatments.

What material to use?

The treatment requires simple tap water! The quality of the water may vary from one municipality to another. If the water is too soft, the iontophoresis effect may be lost. Soft water may not contain enough minerals or electrolytes (tiny electrical particles). Use unsoftened water or add a teaspoon of baking soda to the water used. Some people have found that salt water has a stronger effect. If you are "unhappy" with plain tap water, add a little table salt to the water and treat it that way.

Before you start iontophoresis

  • Iontophoresis treatment should only be used if there are no contraindications. The reasons are the same as for other electrotherapy treatments. Follow the instructions and recommendations of the device manufacturer.
  • You should be aware that you may experience a slight tingling sensation during iontophoresis.
  • You should also be aware that the electric current used during iontophoresis is not strong enough to cause any harm.
  • Do not use iontophoresis if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, heart disease or epilepsy. If you are unsure, ask your doctor.
  • Remove jewellery, rings, bracelets before iontophoresis treatment.
  • If you have a cut or scratch on your skin, apply Vaseline before treatment to protect the wound from scabbing. Vaseline inhibits iontophoresis, so apply only where and in the amount needed.
  • The treatment may cause slight redness of the skin. This will disappear in a few minutes. If it doesn't, ask your doctor what to do.
  • If it dries out your skin too much, use a moisturiser after treatment.

Hand and Foot Sweating Treatment with Iontophoresis

  • Get a large iontophoresis kit, approx.
  • Get two plastic bowls. Each the size that your hands or feet can just fit into.
  • In the bowl, pour a layer of water about 1 cm thick. The hand or foot should be only half submerged in the water.
  • Connect the electrode-cable-electrode device as described in the previous paragraph.
  • Place one sponge-electrode in one bowl and the other in the other.
  • Stand on it with both hands or feet.
  • Start the device.
  • Run the iontophoresis program with a current of 10-15mA.

Treating healthy sweating with iontophoresis

treating underarm sweating with iontophoresis
  • Connect the electrode-cable-electrode device as described.
  • Place one of the moistened sponge-electrodes under one of your armpits and the other under the other. Keep your arms tightly locked around your torso until the end of the treatment.
  • Install the device. Run the iontophoresis program with a current of 10-15mA.

Systemic iontophoresis treatment is very likely to reduce or eliminate uncomfortable sweating.
