Without regular treatment, lymphoedema usually worsens gradually. Chronic fluid stasis causes connective tissue changes, hardening and increased risk of infection. Early, consistent and regular treatment is therefore not an optional extra but the basis for slowing deterioration.

Recognise a dangerous complication
In lymphoedema, the skin's defence can be weakened, so the risk of cellulitis (a bacterial skin infection) increases.
Sudden redness, warmth, pain and fever?
This may indicate cellulitis. Immediate medical assessment is required — this is not something to experiment with at home.
